Something’s happening at the Chazen

Museum staff have been working for the past few years to reimagine how the collection artwork is presented in the galleries, and will soon begin reinstalling about 1,500 paintings, sculptures, prints, drawings, ceramics, glass, and other works of art in freshly painted and redesigned spaces—including galleries in the Elvehjem building, which has been closed for renovation. The entire museum—both buildings—will re-open in the fall.

  • On April 6, the Chazen building’s third-floor galleries will close, and the art will start moving. (The object study and the Chen Family Study Room on the Chazen building’s second floor will remain open by appointment through the end of Spring Semester.)
  • On May 11, the Chazen building’s second floor will close. The Chazen Café and Mead Witter Lobby will remain open throughout the summer.
  • The Rowland and Garfield galleries remain closed.

The galleries in the Elvehjem building are closed during renovation; offices, classrooms, and the Kohler Art Library in the Elvehjem building are open per their respective schedules.

The Chazen Café is located just inside the entrance to the museum at 750 University Avenue. Operated by the Wisconsin Union, the café offers a wide selection of hot and cold drinks, snacks, and lunch items.
