Crackled White. No. XXXI (Blanc craquelat. No. XXXI)

Antoni Tàpies

Antonio Tàpies has called his paintings "walls of communication," noting that the observer should complete the sketch or the allusion by means of his or her own imagination. Tàpies himself is a highly literary painter, collecting rare books, producing unique artist's books, and collaborating with poets in his native Barcelona. He often inscribes the surfaces of his works with signs and symbols, although no such signs are obvious in Crackled White (1992.196). He has carved vertical and horizontal lines through the dense material surface, composed of marble powder suspended in a medium of solidified varnish.
